Set up the AI assistant
The AI assistant answers questions, writes email replies and looks after your to-dos. Before it can answer, an admin needs to connect it to an AI provider.
You'll need
You must be an admin. On a hosted plan with AI included there's nothing to set up: the AI just works. Otherwise you need an account with an AI provider and an API key from them.
Connect it
- Click Settings â AI assistant.
- Choose a Provider: Anthropic, OpenAI, or Ollama (local) if you run an AI on your own computer.
- Leave Model as suggested, unless you know you want a different one.
- Paste your API key (you create this in your provider's own account, on their website).
- Tick Enable the AI assistant for this workspace, then save.
Careful
Your key is stored encrypted on your server and is never sent to people's devices. You pay the provider directly for what the AI uses.
Make it yours
- Name: rename the AI to anything you like. People can then mention it by the new name.
- Custom instructions: tell it about your business, for example You work for Acme Plumbing. Keep answers short and friendly.
- Web search: let it look things up online. This needs a search key (from Tavily) of your own: see Let the AI search the web with Tavily.
How people talk to it
- Private chat: click the + next to Direct messages and choose AI.
- In a channel: type
@AIand your question.
Good to know
The AI can only see what the person asking can already open. The AI assistant page also shows its usage, so you can see how much it's being used.
